Stop Paying For Cable

In this article I’m going to let you know how I watch all of my shows for free…LEGALLY! That’s right, there’s no more need for cable unless you just enjoy paying for something you can get for free. I started doing this about 2 years ago, and have loved it ever since. Anyway, here’s what you will need:

Required Items

  • Computer with decent specs & a dedicated graphics card(nothing ancient).
  • Television with one of the following input ports: DVI, HDMI, or VGA
  • Cable that connects your graphics card to the input port on your tv.
  • High Speed Internet Connection

Optional Items

  • Air Mouse & Wireless Keyboard
  • Wireless Router
  • Wireless Network Card For Your Computer

Make Your TV Your Monitor

The first thing you have to do in order to start watching all of your shows free is to make your TV your monitor. To do this you will need to have the correct cable. First find out what type of input your television takes: DVI, HDMI, or VGA. Next find out what type of connection your video card takes: DVI, HDMI, or VGA. Note: This can also be done via an S-Video connection, but I recommend DVI or HDMI for quality. Now that you know what type of connections you need go find a suitable cable to work. In my case I needed a Male to Male DVI cable. If your TV has an HDMI port, but your Video card only supports DVI don’t worry! There are tons of adapter cables out there, so just find out what you need, and then search for it.

Connect Your Sound card To Your TV

This can be done in a variety of ways, but the most common is through a 3mm jack to RCA adapter cable. In my case I did need this adapter, and the one I bought cost me about $3.00 so it’s not that big of a deal. If your video card supports audio through HDMI, then you won’t need to buy this conversion plug. Also, some audio cards support RCA output, so you wouldn’t need an adapter in that situation.

Finding Shows & Watching Movies

You can find shows for FOX, ABC, NBC, CBS, ABC Family, the CW, TBS, and countless other stations all on their websites. For shows that come on stations such as HBO, Showtime, etc that you generally have to pay extra for, you can find them at SurfTheChannel, CH131, Tudou, Megavideo, Hulu, or any of the other major free video sharing sites out there. The awesome thing about watching your shows online is that there are very few commercials, and you can watch whatever you want whenever you want. It’s similar to having a DVR, or some type of recording device, except you don’t have to waste your time recording anything. It’s all out there sitting on a server waiting to be watched.

Why Not Make It Wireless?

Making your internet connection wireless will allow you to do away with all of the messy cords. You can easily create this wireless connection by installing a wireless network card inside your computer, and installing a wireless router like the one in my closet shown below.

Browse From Your Couch

Having an air mouse is almost a have to, but I listed it under optional, because for a long time my wife and I got up every time we wanted to change shows…Annoying right? Yea, so do yourself a favor and invest in an air mouse, and wireless keyboard. I bought the Gyration GO 2.4ghz used off of Craigslist for $30 (retail is $145 for the set), and it has been the best enhancement I’ve made to my home entertainment center. I can now browse to my shows right from my couch without having to get up, or anything…I can also check my email when I don’t feel like getting out my laptop :)

What Are You Waiting For?

Start setting up your system now! Just think about all of the money you’re going to save on your cable bill. I love my set-up, and wouldn’t trade it for the world. I hope you guys enjoyed this tid bit of information!
